040814 js 0664SPRINGFIELD – Governor Pat Quinn recently announced more than $600,000 in federal grants for two St. Clair County bike paths. The grants were part of a $52.7 million program to promote bike commuting, walking and fitness.

“There is a need in our communities for driving alternatives. Whether people commute on these paths or walk and bike for fitness, these upgrades promote healthy living,” State Senator James Clayborne (D-Belleville) said.

O’Fallon received $448,550 to upgrade the Illini Bike Trail; extending the existing trail and creating a bike lane on Lincoln Avenue.

Shiloh received $226,590 to build trails connecting Scott Air Force Base with other trail systems.

These funds are awarded a competitive basis by the Illinois Department of Transportation. Local governments must match the funds and must begin work within three years.

This year IDOT awarded grants for 71 projects.
